One of Urban Partners key focuses is Engaging with the Next Generation.
With the start of the school year now underway, we wanted to provide an update on two specific projects we are delivering as part of this focus.
Firstly, we are delighted to announce the expansion plans we had for the Homework Club are now underway.
The new programme includes dedicated quiet spaces (provided by Virgin Trains East Coast and Eurostar) and individual tuition in a range of subjects. Special thanks to Peter McDonough from Ted Baker and Luke Fleet from Springer Nature for providing regular history and science tuition.
The new programme also offers students the chance to take part in dedicated masterclasses at Google and The Guardian. Working with the Deep Mind team, young people are now able to improve their digital skills at weekly classes at Google and also their critical analysis skills at classes led by The Guardian.
Thank you to all our hosts and volunteers for their continued commitment and also to Lesley Retallack, CSR Director at Eurostar for her ongoing dedication championing this project.
Secondly, we are proud to announce that on 16th October, we are supporting Islington Youth Council and Camden Youth Council with the delivery of the first joint ‘Youth Council Careers Expo’.
We have been facilitating meetings between these two councils for over two years, and at a recent meeting, the council leaders proposed an idea to us that we couldn’t refuse.
The Careers Expo has been designed to resolve two issues recognised by both youth councils:
- Young people do not know what job and career opportunities local businesses offer
- Young people now need to arrange their own work experience places but, unless they have a specific contact at a company, they struggle to organise this.
We are delighted to be supporting this great event, and have been working with local businesses to arrange a panel discussion, taster masterclasses and various stands which give HR teams the opportunity to tell young people more about the career prospects within their companies.
