Young people are a vital part of the area’s future and we as a business partnership want to work constructively with them.
Our business members actively seek to engage and support young people from across the area, seeing it not only as a way of giving something back to the local community but crucially, helping to connect local young people with young employment opportunities in the area. With the Council’s resources under increasing pressure, we are keen to work in partnership with them, our business members, community groups, schools and colleges to benefit all.
We run a number of projects throughout the year to Engage the Next Generation. These include The Homework Club, paid work experience placements and our annual Youth Career Expo which aims to give young people an insight into the world of work.
Find out more about each project below:
Homework Club provides local young people with a quiet place to study after school, should they not have the option to do this at their home. Volunteers from Eurostar and Springer Nature also provide world-class advice, guidance and knowledge to those in attendance. Find out more here.
Supporting Local Schools
Urban Partners work with our partner schools across the boroughs of Islington and Camden to provide support requested from teachers and students alike. In 2020 we have provided in person career talks, career advice sessions, donations of furniture, financial funding to Edith Neville Primary School to provide a new astroturf pitch and virtual work experience sessions throughout the October half-term.
Virtual Work Experience
Alongside our Next Generation Co-ordinator, our members Argent, Lendlease, Havas and Tileyard provided week long virtual work experience for local young people. This focused on two main strands of work – Creative Industries and City Planning and was well attended.
Feedback was fantastic: Manisha – ‘We were given a lot of insight and information from different companies and it was really relevant to what we wanted to know. It really put things into perspective for me and I have a lot of knowledge which I can use to help myself build my own platform’.
Youth Career Expo
Each year, Urban Partners hold a Youth Career Expo to give local young people an insight into the world of work. With each Expo attended by around 20 businesses and 150 students, with masterclasses, speeches and interactive question and answer sessions, the Expos are a huge success in providing the Next Generation with knowledge they need to make career choices. 100 Hours World Of Work
Urban Partner members have worked closely alongside Islington Council, to provide resources for their World of Work campaign, including career videos which provide young people with short, clear insights into working life. Find resources here.
